Diekirch Mayor Charles Weiler has expressed deep shock at the brutality of a recent fight that broke out at the Aaler Seeërei in Diekirch. In the aftermath of the serious altercation last weekend, the victim remains in critical condition.
He noted that he is regularly approached by residents concerned about what happened, and admitted to being personally affected after seeing footage of the incident. Weiler remarked that he has never witnessed anything like that except perhaps in films, underlining that while the event was traumatic, such violence is extremely rare and not typical for Diekirch.
As mayor, he is therefore making efforts to reassure the local community that this was an exceptional case.
In response to the incident, the municipal council has decided to reach out to the police to discuss ways of improving security at the site. Although video surveillance is already in place at the Aaler Seeërei, it does not cover all areas.
Weiler pointed out that increasing the visibility and scope of cameras could act as a deterrent.
The mayor also stressed the importance of having the necessary resources to investigate such incidents properly, emphasising his trust in the justice system to identify those responsible and hold them accountable. In the case of the recent attack, police enquiries are ongoing.
This week, the police issued an appeal for witnesses, asking anyone who may have taken photos or videos on their mobile phones at the time to share these with investigators. An upload platform was also set up to facilitate the transfer of digital evidence.
