Whether electric vehicles are superior or not is hotly debated. But one thing is clear: many electric cars are already cruising Luxembourg's streets.

As someone who once swore by combustion engines, I've now been a very proud owner of a fully electric car for four months. It wasn’t an easy transition – it meant saying goodbye to my dream car, and yes, there were tears.

That might sound dramatic, but the truth is, since getting my licence many years ago, I had always had my heart set on one car. A modest dream, but not realistic for a high school or university student. However, times change – and so do we – whether we like it or not.

There's been a growing resistance to electric cars, and I’m no longer sure where it’s coming from. Sure, they’re expensive, and the range isn't always ideal. But have you ever driven a fully electric car? I can't even begin to describe how much fun it is. No I can: it's like driving a go-kart! And for the record, my car has more horsepower than my relatives' combustion engine vehicles!

The next shocker? I might be one of the few people in the country who actually bought an electric car second-hand. They're so unwanted that I got it at a great price.

I recently saw an interesting post on LinkedIn in which someone explained China's dominance in the electric vehicle market. They argued that in China, electric cars weren’t introduced as an alternative; they were promoted as the future. And all without banning combustion engines.

It makes me wonder – has the push to ban combustion engines here made it harder for us to embrace the future? Could politicians have done a better job positioning electric cars as the future instead of just an option? Technology is always advancing, and I think most of us would be frustrated if we were still stuck in the past, without the benefits of modern innovations.

Like it or not, electric cars are here to stay. They're not less safe, and they don't spontaneously burst into flames – unlike your combustion engine, which ignites a spark every time you start it!

The presence of electric vehicles on our roads will likely increase, and it will become even more crucial for everyone – drivers and pedestrians alike – to stay alert. Awareness is key to ensuring safety in this evolving landscape.

This piece actually began as a way to raise awareness about electric cars on Luxembourg’s roads and how we need to adjust our thinking. Since I've started driving my spaceship, I've noticed that many pedestrians don't look when crossing the street – they still depend on their hearing and the sounds of engines.

So, for your own safety, keep your eyes peeled – electric cars are coming, whether you like it or not.
