It will soon be possible to personalise car registration numbers in Luxembourg, as was foreseen in the coalition agreement.
The legislative project will soon be discussed in the government council, according to Minister Yuriko Backes in a response to a parliamentary question from LSAP MPs Cruchten and Polidori.
In recent months, the legislative project was drafted to allow car licence plate numbers to be freely personalised, based on a model similar to that in Belgium.
The current version of the project is in its finalisation phase and should be on the agenda of the government council in the near future, the minister writes. More details are not yet known, such as how freely one can decide or how much it should cost.
In Belgium, a fantasy number plate with a first name or ‘007Bond’ or ‘Hahaha’, for example, costs 1,000 euros. In 2023 alone, 13,000 of these types of badges were requested, which brought 13 million to the Belgian state. 1.3% of requests were refused for moral reasons.
In Luxembourg, personalisation with 4 digits is also possible. There will also no longer be a waiting list.
