Minister of Justice Elisabeth Margue commented on the recent attack against a group of guards at the Givenich facility and shed light on the security situation in Luxembourg's prisons.
After a prisoner severely injured a guard at the Givenich prison last week, Minister of Justice Elisabeth Margue announced plans to review existing internal protocols.
On 27 November, an inmate at the half-open facility in eastern Luxembourg attacked several guards, with one requiring intensive care afterwards. Referring to this incident, MP and former Minister of Justice Sam Tanson of the Green Party (Déi Gréng) asked her successor to comment on the security situation inside Luxembourg's three prisons.
Minister Margue noted that while all facilities are equipped with surveillance cameras and guards are always carrying radios, those in direct contact with prisoners are nevertheless exposed to certain risks.
Regarding last week's incident, Margue praised the guards involved for reacting to the attack "in a very professional manner," guaranteeing safety and the maintenance of public order "at all times."
According to the minister, there have been two incidents of physical violence at Givenich prison in 2024, compared to none in 2023, and three in 2022.
Physical attacks have also been recorded in the country's other prisons. In Sanem, there have been 20 such instances since the facility opened while Schrassig saw 50 incidents over the past five years.
