In the French department of Val-d'Oise, on the outskirts of Paris, strong winds caused massive damage in some places and at least one dead.
As confirmed to the news agency AFP, at least one person died in the municipality of Ermont. Local authorities confirmed the casualty to be a 23-year-old construction worker, and that investigations are underway. Eight other people were injured, four of them seriously. The storm "tore off roofs", and cranes also toppled over, as can be seen in videos on social networks and in photos.
The French emergency services deployed 80 firefighters and 50 police officers at the affected locations. According to various media, the bad weather began in the late afternoon. The French newspaper Le Parisien referred to a tornado, while the Val-d’Oise prefecture described it as strong winds and urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel.
Firefighters were operating not only in Ermont but also in Eaubonne, Andilly, Montmorency, and Francoville.
