Road safety remains a top priority as the police continue their "Wintertime 2024" campaign, focusing on vehicle checks across the country.
The initiative, running since mid-October, aims to ensure proper lighting, tyre quality, and overall vehicle condition.
On Monday, police shared the results of the first preventative phase, which ended on 17 November.
407 cases of insufficient lighting were recorded. Drivers were given five days to address the defects following inspections. However, 259 fines were issued for more severe technical deficiencies, including 43 vehicles with unreadable number plates and 19 with faulty exhaust systems.
The campaign will continue until the end of the year, with police sharing three safety tips for drivers:
Visibility: Drivers should ensure all vehicle lights are functional and remain vigilant to their surroundings. Pedestrians, cyclists, and runners are advised to wear reflective or light-coloured clothing to be easily seen.
Vehicle condition: Cars must be in excellent technical condition and equipped with tyres suitable for winter weather.
Driving behaviour: Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, adjust driving style to match weather conditions, and always adhere to speed limits.
