The left party “Déi Lénk” requested that the energy price caps should be kept up by the government for the whole upcoming year, since prices are still much higher than before the crisis.

In a press conference on Friday morning, Déi Lénk highlighted that electricity and gas prices are still considerably higher than what they were before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The new cost of network tariffs, which the left party condemns, also adds to the rise in prices. According to calculations done by the Chamber of Employees, households should expect to pay more for energy soon.

Déi Lénk suggest that those who switched to using a heat pump or driving an electric car appear to be punished for it now, since they have higher electricity usage. Considering that the government subsidies have also been shortened, it is no longer appealing for private people to invest into renewable energy. In that way, as stated by the co-party spokesperson Gary Diderich, the government “sabotaged” their own intentions for the transition to renewable energies.

Furthermore, the population cannot be made responsible for the increase in electricity costs, assert Déi Lénk. The government in charge should fulfil their duties and further enforce the price caps, a demand which the party reinforced by launching a petition.
