The Luxembourg criminal code, or Code pénal, will soon be updated to address offences of insolence towards bus drivers and train inspectors more seriously. Hit-and-run drivers will also face stricter penalties.
Insulting or showing disrespect towards bus and train staff will be treated similarly to offences against police officers and traffic wardens. Article 269, titled outrage à agent, or “insulting an officer,” is expected to be extended to apply to transport staff.
Under this article, offenders may face fines of up to €2,000 or even a prison sentence of up to one month.
This change aims to protect public transport staff in the same way as public officials. Common offences include verbal insults, aggressive gestures, and threats – including written or drawn.
In addition, body cams for police officers are planned for introduction next year.
The government also intends to intensify the prosecution of hit-and-run drivers. These details were provided in response to a parliamentary question posed by Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) Deputy Dan Biancalana.
