With over 1,000 officers and specialised units in action, the Grand Ducal Police enforced top-tier security protocols during the Pope's visit, including snipers, explosive-detection teams and reinforcements from Belgium.

The Grand Ducal police have released information on the special units deployed for the visit of the Pope last week. As the highest security level was put in place, it was part of the police's job to cover aspects of the protection, with more than 1,000 officers on the ground, and further support from their Belgian colleagues.

The Special Police Unit (USP) was in charge of the Pope's inner protection guard, with snipers strategically placed at certain key locations. The so-called Quick Reaction Team was stationed at Glacis square, from where they would have intervened with an armoured vehicle and two motorcycles in the case of an emergency.

While the exact number of regular Street Officers (UPR) has not been disclosed, it has been revealed that they covered 65 escort missions over the course of the day. The canine units, specialised in locating explosives and weapons, were also on the ground for the entire duration of the Pope's visit.
