FM Bettel confirmed Friday that the government is exploring the possibility of opening an embassy in Israel and a cooperation office in Palestine, while also addressing concerns over the handling of Caritas' international projects and employee redundancies following the transition to its successor organisation.
Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel on Friday announced that the Ministry is currently considering the option of opening an embassy in Tel Aviv and establishing a cooperation office in Ramallah. The weekly newspaper d'Lëtzebuerger Land first reported on these plans on Friday morning, which were later confirmed by Bettel during a meeting of the respective Chamber commission. A final decision is yet to be made, however.
In his address to the parliamentary commission, Bettel also provided explanations as to why Caritas' international projects will not be taken up by HUT, its successor organisation. On Friday, the Independent Luxembourg Trade Union Confederation (OGBL) sharply criticised the treatment of Caritas employees, pointing to the fact that no social plan had been proposed for those facing redundancy.
