The press release in detail

Summerschool 2024: over 7000 applications (29.08.2024)
Communicated by: the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth

The fifth edition of summer school runs from 2 to 13 September. It is an offer consisting of guided activities and levelling up for pupils ranging from primary to secondary school. The summer school is the perfect occasion to refresh their knowledge, consolidate what they have learnt the prior academic year and to catch up with any possible lacks of knowledge in the main subjects.

The summer school was called into life in 2020 to help overcome the education gaps Covid-19 left behind. Nowadays the initiative has become one of the main methods of academic support offered by the Luxembourgish education system, as it also takes into account the heterogeneity of pupils’ needs, which contributes to a better equity of opportunities.

Summer school in numbers

All in all, 7,085 inscriptions have been registered for the summer school 2024. 5,258 of them are primary schoolers and 1,827 are already in secondary school. In 2023, around 6,300 registrations for the summer school had been counted. The most popular guided activities in primary education are language courses, notably German, as well as maths. Language course applications represent 73.43% of the primary school registrations.

In secondary school, math modules are highly-requested, dominating 37.54% of the inscriptions, followed by French with 29.23% and German 25.39%.

447 volunteers hired

In primary school the educational support is assured by 286 volunteers, consisting of 78 teachers and 208 students (with a bachelor's degree). For secondary education, the pupils are taught by 161 volunteers, a number made up of 38 teachers and 123 students (holders of a bachelor's degree too). The students were able to partake in a prior optional formation offered by the ‘Institute de formation de l’éducation national (IFEN)’ and the ‘Service de coordination de la recherche et de l’innovation pédagogiques et technologiques (SCRIPT)’.

The folders organised by subject for the summer school will be available until 15 September.

The summer school courses are closely based on the thematic folders created by SCRIPT for each main subject (German, French, mathematics in primary school; German, French, English and maths in secondary school) and they run from cycle 2 until 4ème.

The folders are also available on www.summerschool.lu which you can access by using the pupils IAM, from the 15 July until 15 September 2024. These include the correct answers and they can be done either autonomously or accompanied by parents, at every moment during the summer break. The platform was visited almost 15,000 times between the 15 July and 28 August 2024, and the suggested folders were even downloaded over 23,000 times.
