Luxembourg road authorities will run pre-winter "dry salting" tests across the national network from 27 October to 7 November, between 3 and 6am, to verify equipment, rehearse procedures, and train staff ahead of the 2025–2026 winter service.

The National Roads Administration is preparing for the 2025–2026 winter season with its annual "dry salting" tests, scheduled from 27 October to 7 November 2025. The early-morning trials, conducted between 3 and 6am to avoid rush-hour traffic, will involve all regional and motorway services. Every unit responsible for snow clearance and road salting across the national network will take part.

The goal of the tests is to ensure that all equipment – from salt spreaders and vehicles to automated systems – functions properly before winter operations officially begin. The dry runs also serve to train new staff and check that salting procedures and response protocols are executed smoothly, a press release from the Administration underlines.

To minimise environmental impact, only a small amount of salt – 5 grams per square metre – is used during these tests, and only over short sections of up to 5 kilometres. The tests are carried out without snowploughs. In cases of potential frost, regular salting quantities are applied.

The Administration's full winter service will run from November 2025 through March 2026, ensuring safe driving conditions throughout the cold months. Outside this period, only a reduced salting service will be maintained.

Officials also reminded drivers that winter tyres are mandatory whenever weather conditions require them
