Luxembourg City's tourism scene is thriving, with new figures from the capital's tourist office indicating a significant increase in visitors and heightened interest in historic landmarks like the Grand Ducal Palace and the Bock Casemates.
The Luxembourg City Tourist Office (LCTO) recently published its provisional report for the season, highlighting a positive outlook for the appeal of the Grand Duchy's capital. At this stage, a staggering 100,000 people have passed by the LCTO office on Place Guillaume II, and an estimated 130,000 people have visited the iconic Bock Casemates.
Speaking to RTL, LCTO marketing chief Edgar Janssen explained that this shows a positive development from previous years, with office visits having increased by 17%. The report further outlines that the majority of tourists in the capital are from Germany, followed by the Netherlands, France, and Belgium.
The Grand Ducal Palace is considered the most popular sight, with up to 10 guided visits on offer every day – and most of them regularly sold-out. According to LCTO sales chief Tanja Bollendorf, close to 400 guided tours are planned for August.
The LCTO currently boasts a pool of 120 tour guides, all of whom have been working in the capital for at least 10 years given that the last training programme took place in 2014. According to officials, they also have guides that have been showing tourists around Luxembourg City for over 40 years.
While the outlook looks promising, Janssen believes there is still room for improvement. New advertising campaigns have thus been launched, both in Luxembourg and abroad, to further raise the capital's profile. Nevertheless, Janssen emphasised, attention will be paid as to not damage the quality of their offer with the growing visitor numbers.
