A number of opposition lawmakers have come out to criticise the new scientific report on the Covid-19 pandemic management, issued by the Chamber of Deputies’ Scientific Unit last week. Critics argue that the document reads more like an enumeration than a real report, demanding a more detailed analysis to draw the right conclusions from the crisis.

MP Marc Baum of The Left (Déi Lénk) laments that the individual measures and restrictions taken during the two pandemic years were insufficiently scrutinised in the report: “Were they meaningful, were they proportional, did they achieve anything? If they did, then that has to be retained as a positive aspect, but if it turns out that they were disproportionate, then that is something that has to be treated with care in the future.”

The report did receive praise from MP Tom Weidig of the Alternative Democratic Reform Party (ADR), who described the document as a decent basis, but who also noted that a more critical analysis from independent experts is needed: “It is our impression that the DP, The Greens, and the LSAP are afraid of such an expert group, and that the CSV appears no longer interested in opening a dialogue despite having requested such an expert group while still in the opposition.”

MP Sven Clement of the Pirate Party said that he was in fact able to draw various conclusions from the report, such as identifying a rise of inequalities in education and that several decisions were not taken unanimously. He further stated that the report now has to be used to foster a wide-ranging debate on the management of future pandemics.

Health Minister Martine Deprez is meanwhile scheduled to sit down for an RTL interview on Tuesday to discuss the report in greater detail.
