Luxembourg lent a helping hand to Belgium during the terrible fire at the Kennedy Tower in Liège, and the city recently awarded medals to the rescue services in recognition of their efforts.

Solidarity and mutual aid were celebrated on Friday, 19 July, in Liège. The city had organised a ceremony in honour of the many responders to the fire at the Kennedy Tower, which occurred in June.

More than 250 people were evacuated from Kennedy tower after a fire broke out, with Luxembourg's Air Rescue aiding in the effort, resulting in at least one fatality and 14 hospitalisations from smoke inhalation.

The mayor of Liège and the secretary general of the Royal Palace awarded 15 medals to the organisations involved in the rescue operation, including the Luxembourg rescue services, announced the CGDIS.

Representatives from the Service of the Reconnaissance and Intervention Group in Perilous Environments (GRIMP) and Luxembourg Air Rescue received a joint medal for the helicopter rescue operation.

The intervention of the Luxembourg rescue services enabled the rescue of several people trapped at the top of the tower.
