On Wednesday afternoon, Prime Minister Luc Frieden held a press briefing to discuss the outcomes of the latest Government Council meeting, which was the last before the summer holidays.
Prime Minister Frieden announced that Luxembourg would comply with Ursula von der Leyen's request by proposing both a male and a female candidate for the EU Commissioner position. He noted that the specific portfolios within the new Commission still need to be clarified before final names can be put forward. Discussions with the Commission President are expected to resume at the end of August.
In other news, Frieden announced a staff reshuffle at the Maison du Grand-Duc. The goal is to allow Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, who will be sworn in as Lieutenant-Representative of the Grand Duke in October, to form a team of his choosing.
The briefing also covered ongoing discussions about pensions. Prime Minister Frieden addressed the stark differences in positions between social partners and underscored the importance of respectful dialogue in reaching a compromise.
