The Left have demanded an increase in Luxembourg's minimum wage, accusing the Grand Duchy of failing to adhere to European legislation.

An EU directive stipulates that the minimum wage should be at least 60% of the gross median wage, meaning Luxembourg's current minimum wage would have to be increased by around 300 euros.

In an open letter, The Left (Déi Lénk) say it is well-known that it is not possible for people to survive on minimum wage in the Grand Duchy. Soaring house prices alone mean that people earning lower wages are forced to spend over half their income on housing.

The party added that the current government's housing policy does not support tenants enough, with the logical consequence that low earners risk falling into poverty despite their employment.

The EU directive must be implemented by 15 November. Until then, The Left say Luxembourg will continue to languish behind other member states.
