It seems to be confirmed that the initial project planned in Esch-Lankelz will not go ahead.
The sports museum was slated for construction in a no-build zone, casting doubt on the entire project's future, including the sports arena, according to Minister of Sport Georges Mischo. The project's overall prospects remain uncertain.
At the entrance to Esch, in Lankelz, a 68,000 square metre area formerly housing a car repair shop was earmarked for redevelopment into a neighbourhood with housing, offices, and the above-mentioned sports facilities. The prestige project, called Perspektiv', is described as a "masterpiece" of urban regeneration on its website. Initial building permits have been granted.
However, in 2022, it became evident that the project faced significant challenges due to the presence of a no-build zone. Minister Mischo emphasised the necessity of adhering to this prohibition in response to a parliamentary question from MP and Esch local councillor Liz Braz of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP).
The designated area for the museum and sports arena is adjacent to a motorway. Although the Minister of Sport indicated in February that the project was still viable, the current situation suggests otherwise. Mischo now proposes seeking alternative sites within Esch-sur-Alzette to comply with the 2021 agreement between the State and the city council. However, no new site plans have been confirmed.
When questioned about the oversight regarding the no-build zone, Minister Mischo, who previously served as mayor of Esch, pointed to his predecessor as mayor, Vera Spautz (LSAP), who had signed the initial agreement with a private company in 2017 to develop the site.
The Minister's response did not clarify whether the land could be reclassified as a buildable zone.
