An explosive attack targeted an ATM in the centre of Wincheringen, a mere 1.5 kilometres from Luxembourg, on Monday morning. The incident led to the arrest of three suspects.

While the investigation is still in its early stages, initial findings suggest that the alleged perpetrators were not particularly adept in their execution.

The attack coincided with the 'Kellertage,' a local festival held over the Whitsun weekend, resulting in the main road of Wincheringen being closed to traffic on Monday morning.

Consequently, the suspects had to navigate a narrower street for their escape. Their getaway, however, was short-lived as their car soon crashed into the parapet of a bridge, coming to rest on the banks of the Mühlenbach river.

At the crash site, German police discovered a BMW with Luxembourg number plates that had been reported stolen. Traces of blood inside the vehicle suggested that at least one of the suspects was injured during the escape.

Seven-hour manhunt

After the police issued alerts on Monday, vigilant citizens responded by reporting sightings of the three suspects, who were on foot. The police, assisted by a helicopter, intensified their search.

Approximately seven hours after the attack, the three men were apprehended in gardens within the village, thanks to detailed information provided by several residents. The suspects were presented before a judge on Tuesday, who ordered that they be remanded in custody.

The German police have yet to determine if this explosive attack on the Volksbank ATM is connected to other recent similar incidents in the Greater Region. The investigation remains ongoing.
