Luxembourg Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel cautions that it is too early to draw conclusions about the proposed Gaza ceasefire, emphasising the need for a temporary solution while labelling the invasion of Rafah the "worst possible" option.
News broke on Monday that Hamas is agreeing to a proposed ceasefire brokered by mediators from Qatar and Egypt. However, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu shortly after announced that the deal Hamas accepted was "far from meeting demands". Nevertheless, negotiations are to continue, he said, with an Israeli delegation departing to Cairo on Tuesday.
Speaking to RTL, Luxembourg Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel said that it was likely too early to draw conclusions given the ever-evolving nature of the situation. The top diplomat is currently at a conference in Los Angeles.
Bettel, who is in constant contact with officials from Israel and surrounding Arab countries, explained that a ceasefire in Gaza remains a priority, same as getting back the Israeli hostages. When asked about the potential invasion of Rafah, the Foreign Minister labelled this the "worst possible option", arguing that a solution, even if only temporary one, is needed to avert further escalation in the region.
