After Jean Asselborn, Paulette Lenert and Nicolas Schmit withdrew from the party's list of EU candidates, others are expected to step in for the LSAP.

Liz Braz, Mars Di Bartolomeo and Franz Fayot are expected to join Marc Angel on the LSAP's list of candidates for the upcoming European Parliament elections in June.

According to RTL sources, this list will still be discussed by party leadership, but is unlikely to undergo any big changes ahead of the vote.

Outgoing MEP Marc Angel, who served as one of the vice-presidents at the EU parliament after the last elections, received 11,000 votes fewer than EU commissioner Nicolas Schmit, the leading candidate for the European Socialists, who recently said he would not stand in Angel's way.

MP Liz Braz, who came sixth in the southern constituency in Luxembourg's recent parliamentary elections, has been selected to join Angel on the list. Sources say it was not an easy decision for the 27-year-old, after saying she hoped to focus on national politics just ten days ago. She also has municipal responsibilities as the LSAP's second member of the Esch-sur-Alzette council.

Other candidates include 26-year-old Danielle Filbig, a councillor for the LSAP in Rambrouch who came fourth in the parliamentary elections, and Michaela Morrisova, who came 14th in Luxembourg City's municipal elections last year and works as an attaché for the party.

The list is rounded off with two more well-known faces in Luxembourgish politics: Chamber vice-president and former minister Mars di Bartolomeo will face the vote at the age of 71, while former economy minister Franz Fayot, 52, hopes to follow in his father's footsteps, after the latter spent a decade in the European Parliament.

The candidates will be officially confirmed at the LSAP's party congress this Saturday.

In 2019, the LSAP garnered 12% of votes in the EU elections, obtaining one seat. The last time the party held two seats in the European Parliament was 1999.
