With just four months and six days remaining, Luxembourg City anticipates the inauguration of another segment of its tram network.

Minister for Mobility Yuriko Backes confirmed to the newspaper Luxemburger Wort that the stretch between the Bonnevoie secondary school and the Cloche d'or stadium will become operational on 7 July. Spanning 3.7 kilometres, this extension will introduce five additional stops along the line.

Kirchberg-Findel connection slated for spring 2025

Initially announced for January 2025, Minister Backes now stated that the launch of tram service between LuxExpo and Findel Airport is expected for "spring 2025."

In May 2023, the most complicated and essential element of the project was completed, as the new tram bridge was installed over the A1 motorway ahead of schedule. On 26 February, the project transitioned into a new phase, involving the redevelopment of the Senningerberg interchange situated along the A1 motorway. This phase has led to adjustments in traffic flow, which will remain in effect until the start of the collective holiday period, i.e., until the end of July.

The new section of the tram linking the LuxExpo station and Findel will be 3.9 kilometres long. Passing through the forest and following the A1 motorway, it will reach top speeds of up to 70 km/h - making it the fastest section of the whole tram network. Passengers will be transported between Findel and Kirchberg at a rate of one tram every 7 minutes.

Future expansion initiatives

In early February, the Chamber of Deputies unanimously approved plans to extend the Luxembourg City tram network to Kirchberg and Hollerich, with an estimated budget of €135 million.

These extensions will connect the Pont Grand-duchesse Charlotte-Pfaffenthal and Laangfur (Kirchberg) stations, as well as the Gare and Hollerich stations.
