The most recent unemployment data for Luxembourg reveals an uptick in the number of individuals actively seeking employment.

As of the end of January, approximately 18,300 individuals were in search of employment in Luxembourg, marking a nearly 16% increase over the past year. This translates to an unemployment rate of 5.5%, nearing levels last seen in November 2023 when it peaked at 5.7%. Currently, just over 10,000 individuals are receiving full unemployment benefits.

According to the National Employment Agency (ADEM), the number of job seekers across all durations of unemployment is on the rise, with the most significant increases observed among highly qualified individuals, i.e., higher education graduates, as well as young people under the age of 30.

While the number of job seekers has surged year-on-year, there has been a simultaneous decrease in available job positions. As of January, companies in Luxembourg have reported nearly 7,000 job vacancies. The number of applications has risen by 8.6% compared to the previous year, juxtaposed with a 30% decline in available positions.

This decline is particularly evident in sectors such as business consultancy, secretarial and support services, IT, transport and logistics, construction, hospitality and tourism, leisure, as well as entertainment.
