In 2022, alcohol was a driving factor behind 16% of serious traffic accidents in Luxembourg, and the cause of 43% of fatal crashes.

The Grand Ducal police has issued warnings to motorists over the upcoming Carnival season, advising people to consume alcohol in moderation and avoid driving under the influence at all costs. Partygoers over the next couple of weeks should make use of public transport where possible, and check with local municipalities if special transport has been organised for selected carnival parties and cavalcades.

The police also say revellers should pay close attention to their belongings and drinks at parties and keep an eye out for pickpockets. Any suspicious activity should be reported to 113 as usual.

Alcohol has a strong influence on a person's vision and reaction time. A blood alcohol level of 0.03 can impair a person's attention, concentration and resistance to fatigue; a value of 0.05 will result in clear changes of a driver's perception, reaction time, coordination and vision. Neuromuscular disorders may also occur.

During the Carnival season, Luxembourg's police will maintain an increased presence on the country's roads, as well as at demonstrations. There will also be increased alcohol checks.
