The Democratic Party celebrated their New Year's Day reception with renewed optimism and a commitment to their core values amidst preparations for the upcoming European elections.
In 2023, the Democratic Party (DP) emerged as one of the winners in the legislative elections, securing two additional seats that ensured their continued involvement in running the government. The party's New Year's Day reception at Melusina, a club located at the heart of Luxembourg City, thus reflected a positive outlook for the upcoming year.
Party officials made an assessment of the past year, which Carole Hartmann, the DP secretary general, described as very positive: "We wanted to increase people's purchasing power. We wanted to carry on with our work on housing and climate protection. Those are also priorities that we have set for ourselves in the coalition agreement of the new government."
Begging ban
According to Hartmann, the coalition agreement prominently highlights the party's core values. She opposes the criticism of MP Dan Biancalana's from the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP), refuting his claim of a deteriorating social climate in the country. The social-liberal stance upheld by the DP in the previous government is also set to persist in the current context, she noted.
Regarding the begging ban, the party emphasises its commitment to fighting organised crime and ensuring public safety, underscoring the importance of providing the police with adequate means for these tasks.
Hartmann concluded by saying that the upcoming European elections will be important for the DP. The party gained two seats in their last run.
