RTL spoke to several individuals living on the streets, who were informed by the police about the new ban and how it will affect them.
Since Friday, the new so-called begging ban has been in effect in the capital. The controversial regulation, which prohibits begging in various places, has been criticised by many parties and organisations. The purpose of the regulation is to address aggressive behaviour whilst begging, particularly from organised gangs that come from abroad to beg in Luxembourg.
However, ultimately, the ban will affect everyone indiscriminately. Homeless people have mixed opinions on the ban. Those chasing after people for money are partially at fault for giving homeless people a bad reputation. The homeless people that were interviewed agreed that something must be done about those individuals.
Over the past two days, the police briefed homeless people on the new rules. After a transition period, no-one will be allowed to have a cup or a box on the ground in front of them to collect money. Those who do not comply will be taken into police custody, according to homeless people. There is no clarity on what will happen after the transition period is over on January 1 and the uncertainty is daunting.
