The uptick in respiratory illnesses during this time of year is “nothing unusual,” according to Dr Marc Trierweiler from the out-of-hours medical centre in Hesperange.
In an interview with our colleagues from RTL Radio on Friday morning, Dr Trierweiler explained that the current spike in cases is expected due to colder weather and increased proximity among individuals, facilitating the easy spread of viruses.
“Cold-like symptoms such as headaches, aching limbs, coughs, and runny noses constitute 80 to 90% of the cases we see. A significant portion is attributed to Covid-19, which still keeps us on our toes. The flu is on the rise, and the RS virus has been around for a while now. In essence, we have our hands full,” Dr Trierweiler noted.
While acknowledging the prevalence of Covid-19, Dr Trierweiler reassured the public that infections typically run their course without complications. For those wishing to protect themselves from colds, he stressed the importance of adhering to well-established preventive measures: regular handwashing, avoiding social interactions when unwell, wearing masks in crowded settings, and steering clear of large gatherings.
