Luxembourg City's central railway station plunged into chaos on Thursday evening, with trains, trams, and cars brought to a standstill for over an hour in the Gare district. On Friday morning, the judicial authorities confirmed that a man was arrested after dropping off a suspicious package containing military weapons.
According to the official statement, the police, acting on the orders of the Luxembourg public prosecutor's office, apprehended the individual responsible for depositing the suspicious package at the CFL information desks in the central station late Thursday afternoon.
The parcel, upon inspection, was found to contain military weapons falling under the purview of legislation on weapons and ammunition. Notably, "training grenades and other military equipment" were identified. The arrested individual, a 40-year-old man, is slated to appear before the examining magistrate on Friday.
Area completely cordoned off
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and confusion as the station area was cordoned off by the police. One witness, intending to catch a train to Metz, recounted the shock of arriving at the station amid the turmoil. Another witness highlighted the widespread disruption, noting the closure of train and tram services leading to the station.
By approximately 7.45pm, the situation was resolved as a 4x4 vehicle from the Luxembourg Army's bomb disposal service successfully removed the potentially hazardous object discovered at the station.
