According to a Luxembourgish MP, deceased people are still receiving post from the Ministry of Health, representing a painful blunder for their loved ones.
DP MP Gusty Graas reported the bitter experience, writing that the Ministry of Health in some instances was still sending post to the deceased, even up to several years after their deaths. He described it as an "additional useless and painful experience" for the dead person's relatives.
In a response to the parliamentary question, acting Minister of Health Paulette Lenert explained the erroneous post was perhaps sent out as part of a generic screening programme. However, the invitations are based on the national civil register, which means the Ministry is reliant on the register being updated accurately. In the event of a death in Luxembourg, the death certificate is recorded by a municipal registry office prior to being sent to the national register.
Lenert said the issuing of invitations is an automatic process, usually carried out a month in advance of the dispatch. This delay can lead to letters being sent out to people who are deceased. "These setbacks are indeed deplorable, and it is in no way the Ministry of Health's intention to aggravate families' grief during such a difficult period following the loss of a loved one," the minister wrote.
