According to 2021 Luxembourg census results - released by STATEC on Friday - 49.3% of residents were born abroad, while 47.2% do not have Luxembourgish nationality.

Statec's report, based on data from the 2021 census, delves into the origins of Luxembourg's population. In order to establish a migratory history, the report looks at people born in Luxembourg with two Luxembourgish parents, and those with at least one parent born abroad.

26.3% of the population have no migratory links, meaning they are Luxembourgers born in the Grand Duchy to parents who were also born in Luxembourg. 73.7% of the population has a direct or indirect migratory history, with 49.3% of population born abroad.

In terms of nationality, 52.8% of residents have Luxembourg citizenship, while 38.2% are citizens of another EU member state. Portugal has the highest representation in the Grand Duchy at 14.5% of the population, ahead of French (7.6%) and Belgian nationals (3.1%). 2% of residents are German, while 6.3% of residents hail from a country outside of the EU.

20.8% of participants (around 70,900 people) in the 2021 census said they had obtained Luxembourgish nationality through naturalisation. The majority of these people - over 50,000 - received citizenship between 2002 and 2021, a period in which a number of reforms applied to the law on naturalisation. 10.9% of the population have dual nationality, or more.
