The Foreign Affairs Minister has condemned Hamas's recent surprise offensive on Israel, reassuring that Luxembourg nationals in the country are safe and underlining the need for a renewed international commitment to a two-state solution.
Jean Asselborn, Luxembourg's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, on Monday addressed the recent suprise offensive on Israel, saying that there is "absolutely no justification whatsoever for what Hamas is doing over there". Asselborn further assessed that the terrorist operation had been prepared by Hamas for a long time.
Once this crisis is over, he stated, the international community should recommit itself more vigorously to peace in the region and to a two-state solution. He underlined once more that nothing can justify the terrorism of Hamas.
In conversation with RTL, the Foreign Affairs Minister also provided reassuring news for Luxembourg nationals in Israel. Asselborn had already confirmed on Sunday that 35 Luxembourg residents were currently in Israel, including tourists, and that they were safe in a hotel.
The Minister indicated on Monday that they were currently stuck in their hotel and had to respect the army's instructions. Nonetheless, if repatriation becomes a necessity, he clarified that it will be conducted in cooperation with Belgium.
