On Wednesday, the Government Council green-lit the extended use of the ‘Nutri-Score’ logo for foodstuffs sold in bulk and for canteen operators, but all on a voluntary basis. The Nutri-Score, which is designed to provide information on the nutritional quality of food and curb overweight, is thus set to become increasingly visible in Luxembourg.
The small logo has the form of a colour scale, ranging from dark green for A-rated products - the healthiest - to dark orange for E-rated products, has already been visible in Luxembourg shops since 2021. Until now, however, it only applied to pre-packaged products.
An updated Grand Ducal regulation brings Luxembourg’s legislation around the use of the Nutri-Score logo, which is protected by French health authorities, in line with the new version of the regulation recently published in France.
Above all, the Government Council decided on Wednesday “to extend the scope of the Nutri-Score use in the form of pilot projects”. Food operators can thereby now test the Nutri-Score system on bulk foodstuffs on a voluntary basis.
According to Patrick Hau, deputy director of the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA), the pilot projects will allow “operators of school or company canteens to display the Nutri-Score on their dishes and menus. But if they decide to do so, they will have to do so on all their dishes.”
Voluntary operators who take part in the pilot projects are required to report nationally to the ALVA, which will monitor their correct application. The Administration monitors the correct use of the Nutri-Score logo in Luxembourg.
Agriculture Minister Claude Haagen has also commented on the new legislation, arguing that once in force, this Grand-Ducal regulation “will make it possible to extend the optional use of the Nutri-Score logo and to be closer to consumers”.
