Photos and videos from the time show the significant damage caused as a tornado, highly rare in the region, hit Luxembourg in 2019.
9 August 2019 will be seared in the memories of many. What started as an ordinary Friday would end with a tornado that first hit France, near Longwy, then travelled about 20 kilometres towards the Luxembourgish municipalities of Rodange, Lamadelaine, Petange, and Bascharage.
It measures at an F1 intensity on the Fujita scale as it hit France, reaching F2 when it arrived in Luxembourg - which corresponds to winds in the range of 180-250 km/h, with its wide destruction radius reaching between 350 and 750 metres.
Lasting just around 15 minutes, it caused significant property damage as roofs were torn off buildings, tiles were sent flying, facades were stripped, cars damaged, and electricity pylons snapped.
According to Meteolux, some 400 trees and 310 houses were damaged in Bascharage alone. Fifty of the affected homes lost their roofs, while debris sent flying at high speeds embedded itself in nearby buildings.
The tornado disappeared as suddenly as it had arrived, somewhere between Schouweiler and Dippach. The damage it caused exceeded 100 million Euro.
While rare, it was not the only tornado to hit Luxembourg.
