One of the winners from this appeal is the “shared kitchen” project, run by the social enterprise ‘Microtarians’ in Kirchberg.

The association, which provides education and training in the field of healthy and sustainable nutrition, launched the “shared kitchen” project as a means of offering the use of various kitchen appliances at their Kirchberg premises to interested parties. Founder Björn Lorenzen says there is a growing number of people struggling to cook for themselves at home.

“Luxembourg has a housing shortage in general, not just Kirchberg. Many people say they’d love to entertain friends at home, but they lack the space, or find it too stressful to tidy their apartment, especially after a long day at work. So that’s why we offer the use of our space.”

The project relies on people from different social backgrounds coming together as a community. In addition, the enterprise plans to purchase fancier machines, such as popcorn or ice cream makers, while also promoting sustainability through old appliances a new lease of life.

“This project enables us to buy items we could otherwise not spare the budget for,” Lorenzen explains. “On the other hand, we already have a lot of items, and we also collaborate with the Repair Café to fix and maintain older appliances.”

Although Microtarians as a business promotes healthy eating, anyone wanting to make use of the shared kitchen can cook whatever they would like. It is also possible to borrow the kitchen appliances for an added cost. The company is still working out exact price details.
