New details emerged Friday on the projected tram extension between Kirchberg and Findel airport.

The highlight of the new extension is the brand new bridge which now spans the A1 motorway, standing 9 metres tall, 110 metres long and 10 metres wide. The 3.9 kilometre section, which will permit the tram to run at a speed of 70 km/h, will cost €99 million.

Initially, the tram between Kirchberg and Findel airport will run every six minutes from autumn 2024.

Other tram stages include new stops in Kirchberg, close to RTL headquarters, as well as Boulevard Adenauer and from the main railway station to the Bouillon via Hollerich.

A transport hub is also due to be constructed in Senningerberg with the aim of relieving traffic congestion in the capital. The hub will permit motorists from eastern Luxembourg to make tram connections to travel further into the city.

On Friday it was also announced that a finance bill will be tabled in September to plan for the rapid tram project between Luxembourg City and Esch-Belval. The project covers the conversion and expansion of the A4 motorway and has an estimated budget of €1.4 billion.
