A former employee of the National Health Fund (CNS) has been found guilty of embezzling approximately €2 million over a period of nearly ten years.

The prosecution initially sought a 3.5-year prison sentence with the possibility of suspension, but the court has now handed down a 7-year prison sentence, with three years suspended. In addition to the prison term, the accused has been fined €100,000.

The embezzlement scheme involved not only the convicted individual but also her husband, a friend, and the latter's former partner, all of whom profited from the stolen funds. They have been sentenced to five years in prison, with 30 months suspended, and fined €50,000 each.

Another person, who voluntarily came forward after the fraud was exposed, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison, fully suspended, and fined €1,500.

The primary defendants, as a couple, are required to repay over €450,000 to the National Health Fund, while the remaining three defendants collectively owe €1.6 million in restitution.

The verdict is not yet final. All parties involved have a 40-day window to file an appeal.
