A reader sent photos to RTL of an exceptional weather phenomenon, which was observed above Brandenburg Castle in Tandel on Thursday.
On Thursday afternoon, a "halo" was observed above the castle. This phenomenon is a type of rainbow, characterized by a ring of light that encircles the sun. The color of the halo can vary depending on different factors.
This phenomenon occurs when light is refracted by ice crystals present in thin, high clouds, typically Cirrus or Cirrostratus clouds, which are located at an altitude of eight to twelve kilometers.
Although a thin layer of ice crystals is necessary for this circular rainbow to form, it can happen regardless of the weather. The clouds that contain the ice crystals are usually so high up that it is always very cold.
The shape and intensity of a halo depend on the position of the sun. While halos are not uncommon, they are often so weak that they go unnoticed. They can also occur around the moon, appearing white and even more difficult to spot.
