According to a recent response to a parliamentary question, Luxembourg consumed 1,864 hectares of land between 2007 and 2018.

Luxembourg consumes roughly 170 hectares of land per year, 90% of which is used for farming. These figures were provided by Minister of Agriculture Claude Haagen and Minister for Spatial Planning Claude Turmes in response to a parliamentary question by MPs André Bauler and Gusty Graas from the Democratic Party (DP). Between 2007 and 2018, a total of 1,683 hectares of farmland have disappeared, i.e., fields and meadows that were repurposed, often as building land. Some 270 hectares were used as building land for "agricultural structures," according to the ministers.

The total land consumption between 2007 and 2018 was 1,864 hectares. 156 hectares of woodland were also lost during the same time period. In their response, the ministers state that the government has pledged to slow down land consumption as part of its master plan for spatial planning. The declared aim is for rural areas to be less affected by urban sprawl in the future, and for construction to take place primarily where it makes the most sense.
