At the request of two MPs from the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP), the Ministry for Mobility and Public Works published the figures for night-time accidents leaving people injured in 2020 and 2021 on Monday.
According to the Ministry's data, 127 accidents involving injuries were recorded, with alcohol playing a role in 70% of cases. The report mentions 89 such accidents where alcohol levels were later confirmed to have been above the legal limit.
Of these accidents, four were fatal, 24 resulted in severe injuries, and 62 resulted in minor injuries. However, the Ministry fails to specify whether these figures reflect the number of deaths or injuries or whether they are a count of accidents in which deaths or injuries occurred.
The report thus paints a disturbing picture of road safety in Luxembourg as it further reveals that 3,690 driving licences were revoked for drink driving during the same period.
In a report based on the 2020 figures, the European Commission also recently singled out Luxembourg. According to calculations from the European Road Safety Observatory (ERSO), the Grand Duchy has the highest frequency of speeding and drink driving in the European Union.
