Foetz, a member of déi Lénk, queried the Hamilius area’s status as a public space falling under the jurisdiction of the municipal council, after it was reported that women’s rights group JIF had been advised not to protest around Royal Hamilius on 8 March. The owners of the Hamilius complex, a real estate group, had objected to the demonstration taking place.

On Monday, Luxembourg City mayor Lydie Polfer answered Foetz’s query at a council meeting. Hamilius is, and will remain, a public space, Polfer confirmed. The information released regarding the protest and the subsequent “ban” was factually incorrect, she added:

“The owners are effectively responsible for the site in terms of stability, so no acts can be carried out which might bring the stability into question. However, this does not mean that events cannot take place as normal in the area, so long as they follow the rules which apply to all public spaces in the city.”

The council has already informed JIF of the decision, with the march now likely to proceed as planned.
