One of the city's most pressing issues, according to Mayor Polfer, is keeping our society together. Despite Luxembourg City’s diverse population of 167 nationalities, Mayor Polfer says the city functions because everyone contributes.
Mayor Lydie Polfer of Luxembourg City talked about the challenges that lie ahead of the 2023 municipal elections, set to take place on June 11.
The Liberal politician acknowledges that there are complex processes that can take too long and sometimes hold back solutions, such as in the case of housing.
To address the growing population and job opportunities in the city, Mayor Polfer emphasised the importance of encouraging the use of public transport over cars. She also mentioned that the city is prepared for the expansion of European Institutions on Kirchberg and wants to continue providing livable living quarters for its residents and workers.
The Mayor highlighted her record of signing off on over 7,000 housing units in the last five years but acknowledged that there are still challenges in addressing what she calls the challenge of housing. She stressed the need to work with the state and the Fund of Kirchberg to propose solutions and working with the private sector to continue meeting the demands of housing.
Polfer expressed her wish to do better every day, acknowledging that there are always opportunities to improve. She also discussed the traffic congestion in the city, mentioning she wants to continue efforts to free residential neighbourhoods from through traffic.
Finally, she stressed the importance of civic responsibility and encouraged foreign-residents, which she called “our colleagues, our friends, our neighbours” to take an active role in shaping the future of their city by registering to vote.
