Motorists and pedestrians alike have been advised to exercise caution this Thursday, as children across Luxembourg will be walking the streets with their homemade lanterns to celebrate "Liichtmëssdag", or Candlemas.

Luxembourg's Road Safety association has issued a press release with advice for parents and drivers alike ahead of the festival, which sees children visit houses in their neighbourhood on the hunt for sweets, accompanied by traditional songs and brightly coloured paper lanterns.

Young participants should always walk on the pavement, pay attention when crossing the road and ensure they only cross roads in secure places. Both children and their accompanying parents are encouraged to wear clothing with high-visibility, and light-reflecting accessories where possible.

Motorists should exercise particular caution on Thursday afternoon and evening. If drivers spot a group of children at the side of the road, they should be prepared to hit the brakes, said the Road Safety association.
