In Differdange, a shooting broke out Monday night right in the city centre. So far, authorities – including the police and the public prosecutor's office – have not released any official information. However, Differdange Mayor Guy Altmeisch confirmed to RTL that around midnight, several shots were fired from a car at pedestrians at the intersection of Avenue de la Liberté and Grand-Rue.
No injuries were reported, though according to our information, about 10 shots were heard. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unknown for now.
According to his own statements, the mayor was informed of the events by the police at 8am, so that he would not learn about the shooting from the press. Nevertheless, as stated earlier, the media have still not been officially informed.
According to Guy Altmeisch, a car with visible bullet holes was towed away the following day. Police have launched an investigation.
Detectives will review footage from surveillance cameras, which have been operating in the country's third-largest municipality since the start of the year.
For the mayor of Differdange, this incident earlier in the week is further proof of the usefulness of these cameras for solving cases and identifying perpetrators. In Differdange, 49 cameras are currently in operation as part of the Visupol system.
A similar incident took place in Differdange in April last year, when shots were fired from a car at a café on Rue Émile Mark. According to the mayor, the establishment has since closed. No one was injured in that incident either.
