After the launch of an investigation by the public prosecutor in 2019, two municipal employees confessed last year to embezzling public money in Hesperange.

Two days before the start of the Hesperange embezzlement trial, the municipality will finally publish the report of the audit connected to the case. The document, which non-profit organisation StopCorrupt has been demanding be released for more than two years, was ordered by the administrative court.

The municipality of Hesperange told RTL that it will not appeal the request of the administrative court. The report can therefore be made public without the names of those involved being disclosed. Mayor Marc Lies from the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) indicated that the municipality was not in a position to publish the document while it was still part of the judicial investigation.

The trial will start on Wednesday with two former municipal officials and a businessman from the commune of Hesperange implicated. The main charges against them are embezzlement of public money, forgery, fraud, and misuse of public funds. A sum of €5 million was allegedly involved.

The matter came to light in the summer of 2019 after insurance payments were not transferred to the municipality's accounts. The investigation revealed that funds had been transferred to other accounts that were not connected to the local administration, resulting in the municipality immediately filing a complaint for embezzlement.

The three Greens councillors from the local opposition welcomed the verdict of the administrative court, claiming that the vow of silence around this case had now been broken.
