In conversation with our colleagues from RTL 5minutes, the Minister for Mobility and Public Works provided insight into the latest developments of the tram, which he expects to reach two new destinations by 2024.

The development of Luxembourg City's tram project is edging ever closer to its ultimate goal: the completion of sections D (Bonnevoie-Cloche d'Or) and E (Luxexpo-Findel). Passengers will then be able to travel from Cloche d'Or to Findel airport by tram and vice versa.

According to Minister for Mobility and Public Works François Bausch, this will be possible as of autumn 2024. The Greens politician confirmed that the Bonnevoie-Cloche d'Or section will be completed and put into service "in spring of 2024" while Findel will be connected "in autumn of 2024". Thanks to this envisaged progress, he labelled 2024 the year of the tram.

According to the Minister's forecasts, trams might already be running from Bonnevoie to Cloche d'Or in December 2023 in a "test phase". At the other end of the route, the tests should take place during the summer of 2024 with the aim of opening the section to the public a few weeks later.

Once completed, the tram line will extend over 16.4 km and will connect no fewer than 24 stations, including nine interchange points. "Two new stations will have been built in the capital by then", explained Minister Bausch: one in Pfaffenthal, the other in Howald. The Minister shared his belief that "this will change the face of public transport in the capital".

With a frequency ranging from three to six minutes, it is the ambition of Luxtram to reach a capacity of 10,000 passengers per hour and per direction.
