Luxembourg's national laboratory registered "high epidemic activity" for the common flu virus over the past week, with nearly 15% of consultations related to flu symptoms.

The flu generally peaks in February and March; however, this month has seen an increase in cases, with no end in sight, according to experts. Some 14.6% of consultations over the past week were for patients displaying flu symptoms.

It is therefore recommended to get the flu vaccine as soon as possible, particularly for the elderly and medically vulnerable, as it can take up to two weeks to develop full immunity. The jab can be given alongside coronavirus vaccines.

The Influenza A virus was most frequently detected over the past week, making up 36.6% of cases. 15% were found to be rhinovirus, or the common cold, while 13.4% were RSV, or bronchiolitis, which has swamped paediatric services in Luxembourg over the past months.
