The current bronchiolitis epidemic has reached critical levels in Luxembourg after a high number of children fell ill at the same time, said the Luxembourg paediatric society on Friday.
Paediatric services in Luxembourg are currently overwhelmed, leading to the cancellation or postponement for all non-vital procedures on young patients.
RSV, or respiratory syncytial virus, which triggers bronchiolitis, cannot be treated with specific medication or antibiotics.
For this reason, the society of paediatricians advises patients to adopt the same health measures practised during the Covid pandemic, such as wearing masks or keeping distance, and advises parents not to send sick children to childcare facilities.
The Kannerklinik paediatric clinic in the capital has observed an extreme rise in cases over the past few weeks.
The number of children hospitalised has jumped up significantly, which has so far been accommodated by an increased number of beds set up by a crisis unit and the Ministry of Health.
