In her response to a parlimentary question, Minister of the Interior Taina Bofferding provided the figures of indebted municipalities to the Pirates MP Marc Goergen.
The northern commune of Wiltz is in first place, with debts totaling 66 million euros. The municipality of Echternach is just behind Wiltz with 54 million euros in loans. Differdange is in third place with 51 million euros.
About a dozen municipalities have no debts, including the municipality of Luxembourg. To date, there is no reference that shows the debt per inhabitant.
The minister also added that municipalities must follow strict rules if they incur debts.
The amounts of land that have been sold this year are also listed in the ministry’s table. At the top of the list is the municipality of Bissen with sales of over 12 million euros. Upon request, we were informed that the land is mainly used for industrial purposes.
