With Covid-19, bronchiolitis, and the seasonal flu circulating in the Grand Duchy, the demand for medicine is currently very high. However, pharmacy stocks are continuously decreasing, a problem also affecting Luxembourg's neighbouring countries.

Marco Cardoni, a pharmacist from Dudelange, spoke with RTL and explained that patients are not  guaranteed to immediately receive the medication they have been prescribed. Pharmacies in Luxembourg receive medication deliveries from three major suppliers, who themselves get medicine directly from laboratories.

Part of the reason laboratories are running behind on manufacturing medical drugs is due to the significant amount of staff that were let go during the course of the pandemic, explained Danielle Becker-Bauer, vice president of the national pharmacists' syndicate.

Representatives from the sector assure that there is still no reason for concern, although some types of medication are currently not as readily available as they previously were. Although pharmacists are able to find alternative solutions or re-consult with the patient's doctors, they urge politicians to take the problem seriously and consider relocating drug manufacturing sites to Europe.
