The funicular is operated by the Luxembourg national railway company, CFL.

It connects the Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg railway station to the Luxtram stop near the headquarters of the European Investment Bank.

On weekdays, the service attracts 7,000 passengers a day.

In November 2022 alone, its four carriages were used in total by 161,414 passengers.

CFL estimates that the funicular cuts the journey time to Kirchberg by 20 to 30 minutes, for passengers travelling by train from Petange, Esch-sur-Alzette or Ettelbruck.

The 200 metre journey takes 63 seconds, on a 19.7% incline. The maximum capacity of the line is 7,200 people per hour - with up to 168 passengers per cabin at any one time.
